AnonFTP
- Anonymous FTP
(File Transfer Protocol) this feature allows your guests to
upload content (files) to an incoming directory on your web
site.
Archive Manager - The
archive manager is a tool available in your control panel.
This feature provides a means of backing up files on your
site by compressing them. Backing up files is a sound practice,
in case the original files should become damaged. Compression
reduces the size that your files use, freeing space.
Bandwidth
- The total amount of traffic generated by your
site. If you deliver 1000 pages a day of 50.0 kilobytes each,
including images and other files in them, then your web site
will consume 50 megabytes of bandwidth per day, about 1.5
gigabytes per month. Over 90% of all web sites never go above
5Gb of data transfer per month.
CGI
BIN - A special directory in your site where common
gateway interface (CGI) scripts are stored. CGI scripts are
executable programs, having CGI scripts in this special, protected
directory keeps your site secure.
Control Panel - The Control
Panel facilitates the management of your web site's hosting
account. This useful and easy to use control center provides
a way for you to quickly access and view all account information.
With the wide array of tools that come with your account,
you'll be able to manage e-mail accounts, directories, passwords,
view your site's statistics, etc; all with the click of your
mouse. As your business grows, you can add additional features,
as they are needed.
Cybercash Support - Online
credit card processor. If you are using Cybercash, you can
then install the local configuration for your domain on our
servers, via the control panel.
Data
Transfer (MB) - Same as Bandwidth.
Detailed Site Statistics -
An option available in your control panel. You can view
many statistics about the usage of your web site using this
option. You'll be able to see how many visitors have come
to your site, the most visited pages, visitors per day, etc.
Disk Space(MB)
- Disk space refers to the amount of space allocated
on our servers to keep your web site files. Just one Mb is
enough space to store several hundred HTML pages and images.
Our smallest, most affordable plan offers 75Mb.
Domain Name - For instance,
"yourname.com" is a domain name. It is a unique
name that identifies a web site on the Internet.
E-mail
Addresses - Electronic mail. This service lets
you send messages to other users with an e-mail address. Webtronite's
e-mail addresses plans are very generous, providing you with
plenty of address to be set up with your account.
File
Manager - An option found in your Control Panel.
The File Manager Option allows you to perform file management
tasks such as creating files and directories, setting the
read, write or execute permissions on the files and directories
in your site, renaming or deleting files or directories, and
changing the password for directories that are password-protected.
Form to e-mail - Once
installed, this feature allows you to receive e-mail from
your users by using a web form. The Form-mail option in your
control panel has step-by-step instructions on how to use
this option on your web site.
Form to PGPmail - This
option is much like Form to E-mail. The difference is that
it uses your PGP key to encrypt the message.
Frontpage extensions - Frontpage
is an HTML editor developed by Microsoft. It is a tool used
to create web pages. Some features of MS FrontPage require
that special server extensions be installed on the server.
All our plans have this feature available.
FTP - Short for File
Transfer Protocol. An FTP client is used to upload/download
files to/from a server.
Gateway
- A device used to connect networks using different
protocols, so that information can pass from one system to
another.
GIF (Graphic Interchange Format)
- A widely used image file format. It is appropriately
used for images that contain few colors, or large areas of
the same color.
Gigabyte -
1000 or 1024 Megabytes, depending on the standard used.
HTML
- Hypertext Markup Language. A language developed
for writing pages for the World Wide Web. HTML allows a designer
to create the code needed to program a web site, specifying
fonts, graphics, links, etc.
InterNIC
- The official domain name registry of the Internet.
JPEG
- Joint Photographic
Experts Group. This is the graphics format most commonly used
for photo images on the Internet. Using JPEG, developers create
web sites that load fast, while keeping image quality high.
Kilobyte
(Kb) - A thousand
bytes. Most buttons used on web pages average about 2Kb. 1,000Kb
equals 1Mb. A 3.5" floppy disk can contain 1.37Mb. CDs
can contain from 650 to 700Mb.
Mail
Manager - An option in your control panel. The
Mail Manager provides several ways of managing the mail accounts
you set up on your account.
Mailing Lists - This
option comes included with your account. Mailing lists allow
you to send e-mail to a large number of contacts, fast and
efficiently. You can manage your mailing list through the
control panel. Mailing lists may cover a wide spectrum of
topics, including technical, or social and recreational areas
of interest.
Midi Files - Musical
Instrument Digital Interface file. In other words, sound files
you can play on your computer. All the popular MIDI file types
are supported on our servers.
MIME Type Manager - The
Mime Type option, available in your control panel, allows
you to specify which types of files you can open with your
web browser.
MySQL - A database server
using SQL (Structured Query Language), the most popular and
widely used database language in the world. What makes MySQL
so attractive as database server is its speed, ease of use,
and robust architecture.
Network
- Two or more computers connected, sharing resources.
The Internet is perhaps the largest network.
Newsgroups
- The name for discussion groups on USENET.
Node
- Any single computer connected to a network.
Page
Access Counters - An option available in your control
panel. It allows you to have a hit counter on your site, allowing
you to see how many times a page that has the counter has
been visited.
PHP 3.0 - A server-side
scripting solution already in use on over 72,000 World Wide
Web sites. This version of the popular scripting language
includes support for all major operating systems (Windows
95/NT, most versions of UNIX, and Macintosh) and web servers
(including Apache, Netscape servers, Web Site Pro, and Microsoft
Internet Information Server).
PGP - Short for Pretty
Good Privacy It is a method of encryption that can be applied
to scripts that you use to send e-mail.
Plug-in
- Usually a small software that adds more functionality
to a larger software. For example, whenever you see a Macromedia
flash movie on your browser, it is being played the flash
plug-in working within your browser. Our plans support most
popular plug-ins.
POP - Acronym for Post
Office Protocol, a protocol used for retrieving mail from
a remote server.
Raw
Log Files - Files generated by a web server with
information about your web site. With these files, you can
use your own analysis program to view your statistics information.
This is feature that will be useful to advanced users mainly.
Remember to view your site's statistics by clicking the icon/option
in your control panel.
Real Audio - Popular
format used to provide streaming audio on the Internet. Our
servers support real audio/video streaming.
Real Video - Popular
format used to provide streaming video on the Internet. Our
servers support Real Video streaming. If you have a video
presentation you would like to show on your site, you can
use Real Video.
Search
Engine - The Search Engine options in your web
site's control panel allows you to install the Search Engine
feature on your site. Once installed, place the necessary
code on your HTML pages. Visitors to your site will be able
to easily search and find the content they need.
Server - A very fast,
reliable, industrial-grade computer designed to host web sites
and files. A web site server is connected to the Internet
via high speed connections.
Shockwave - A program,
available as a plug-in, which enables a browser to view files
created with Macromedia Director or Macromedia Freehand. Most
web pages that incorporate multimedia, uses Shockwave.
SSL Server
- Secure Socket Layer. Simply puts, a Secure Server.
This is the industry standard technology used to perform secure
transactions on the Internet, such as placing credit card
orders. Our servers support SSL, we use Apache-SSL. For SSL
to work in your domain, you must acquire a secure certificate
from Thawte or Verisign. Once you have your certificate, you
can install it on your web site by using the control panel.
Static IP Address - Each
of our hosting accounts comes with a unique, static IP address.
This means that the address will never change. This provides
you with a solid, permanent address.
Telnet
- The command and program used to log in remotely
to other computers on the Internet. This Terminal Emulation
protocol program, uses a command line interface.
URL
Redirect - This feature allows you to change the
file that appears when a visitor goes to a specific address.
